Thermit® News July 2019

The name Elektro-Thermit has stood for reliability and cooperative partnership for 100 years. We would like to share our commitment.

Save the Children e.V. is the world's largest independent children's rights organisation. They have been truly committed to supporting and improving the lives of children for 100 years.

We would like to use our anniversary this year as an opportunity to appeal to you to donate to children in need, rather than sending us gifts as a company.

We would be truly grateful for your donations.

Currently, printed instruction leaflets are included with every delivery of boxes of moulds for THERMIT® welding. The leaflets provide application notes for applying the moulds for transitions and cardboard blanks. The number of instruction leaflets depends on the particular welding process. From now on, there will only be a digital version. This can be opened directly as a PDF using the QR code on the product box. The QR code can be read with any smartphone or tablet, using a QR code scanner. This means that the instruction leaflets can be viewed online at any time, while saving paper and reducing the impact on the environment. The instruction leaflet for transition moulds is an exception. This will continue to be included in the boxes of moulds until the end of the year. From 2020 there will then likewise only be a digital version of this instruction leaflet.

Elektro-Thermit will be supplying the Indian construction firm Larsen & Toubro for the Mauritius Metro project. What is so special about this new stretch of track is that, since the closure of Mauritius Government Railways in 1964, the island has not had any rail transport. The severely overcrowded road network has led to discussions about an urban railway system for some years now. In 2017, the government finally signed a contract to build a light rail transportation system. It is simultaneously the largest construction project in the island’s history and a showcase project for modernising the economy. Once it is fully up and running in 2021, the urban railway will connect five towns over a 26 km stretch of track. It is expected that 50,000 commuters will use the service. Grooved and flat bottom rails on the new track will be welded using our materials. The company that has been contracted will exclusively use the SMARTWELD JET for preheating.

Elektro-Thermit is supplying more than 5,000 THERMIT® kits for the Asyut-Nag Hammadi project in Egypt. This is one of the largest orders for THERMIT® that we have received to date from Egypt. The kits will be delivered in batches, starting with 300 kits in July. Elektro-Thermit has already sent 3,000 insulated rail joints for the same railway project. The background to the Asyut-Nag Hammadi project is the replacement of the signal system along the entire track.

To mark the firm’s 100th anniversary, on 16 May Elektro-Thermit GmbH & Co. KG invited guests to the largest and most cutting-edge THERMIT® manufacturing plant in the world. Around 90 well-wishers were in attendance, including Minister-President of Saxony-Anhalt Reiner Haseloff, Mayor of Halle Bernd Wiegand, chairman of the advisory board of the Goldschmidt Thermit Group Karl T Goldschmidt and other members of the Goldschmidt family, the managing directors of the Goldschmidt Thermit group, partners and suppliers as well as current and past employees. In this historic setting, the speakers paid tribute to the success story Elektro Thermit has written over the 100 years of its existence, and expressed their thanks to the staff for their hard work.

In his welcome address, Dr Reiner Haseloff said: “I congratulate Elektro-Thermit on this anniversary, and I am delighted that we can hold the celebration in Saxony-Anhalt; the company has been based in Halle since 2005. This has contributed to employment and revenues in the region. Many thanks for your engagement in Saxony-Anhalt.”
